Breast Implant Exchange

When you originally had breast augmentation surgery, you wanted to enhance your figure. Over time, it may become necessary to replace your implants, or you may want to alter the size or shape of your breasts to suit your current concept of beauty.

Your original implants may need replacement due to their age or the development of certain conditions such as capsular contracture, with the need to have breast implant replacement surgery. Dr. Adam Hamawy is an acclaimed, highly-skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon who employs the most advanced surgical techniques.

What is Breast Implant Exchange?

During breast implant exchange surgery your current breast implants will be removed and replaced with one of the latest generation of modern breast implants. The surgical procedure in breast implant exchange may prove to be more complex than your original breast augmentation. It is critical that you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who understands the intricacies of breast implant exchange.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Implant Exchange?

Even the best breast augmentation procedures may require a touch-up after time has passed. Women who are in generally good health who would like to create another look, whether larger, smaller, or more natural in appearance–often choose to undergo a second procedure at Princeton Plastic Surgeons, where we are known for the high quality of our surgical work.

Why Do Women Choose Breast Implant Exchange?

There are many reasons a woman may seek to exchange her breast implants including:

  • Treating capsular contracture and the formation of scar tissue
  • Changing the size or type of your implant
  • Dissatisfaction with the results of your previous surgery
  • Correcting asymmetrical breasts
  • Replacing a leaking implant
  • Your implants have shifted
  • Your skin has thinned or stretched
  • Camouflaging visible borders of implants

What is the Procedure for Breast Implant Exchange?

Breast implant exchange is performed in much the same manner as your original breast augmentation. Dr. Hamawy will use the same incisions that were previously used to minimize scars. This will ensure that you do not have new scars once your body has healed from your breast implant exchange. If, however, you are choosing to go with a larger implant or another type of implant, it may be necessary for Dr. Hamawy to surgically create more space for your new implants.

What is the Recovery following Breast Implant Exchange?

Each body is different and will heal at its own pace. If your procedure also involves the removal of scar tissue, your recovery may be slightly longer. Dr. Hamawy will prescribe pain medication to allow you to recover in comfort. Patients usually only require one to two days off of work following breast implant exchange. It is important that you not lift, push, or pull heavy objects for at least one week following your procedure.

Can Breast Implant Exchange be Combined with Other Procedures?

If you are choosing to have breast implant exchange because your skin has thinned, or your implants have shifted, you may choose to have a breast lift performed at the same time as your breast implant exchange to create a youthful, fresh look by lifting the breasts on the chest wall. In addition to a breast lift, many women choose to combine breast implant exchange with liposuction, a tummy tuck, or fat grafting for a full makeover. Dr. Hamawy can speak with you about all of your options in a private, discreet consultation.

How Soon After my Initial Breast Augmentation can I have Breast Implant Exchange?

This is different for from woman to woman. Depending on when you had your initial breast augmentation, your implant exchange can likely be scheduled right away.
