Testosterone Therapy for Men

Many common conditions are associated with low testosterone levels, which decrease with age. These low “T” levels can make you feel tired and irritable, gain weight, and lose your sexual drive. Low T can also increase your risk for other health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes.

At Princeton Plastic Surgeons, we offer Bioidentical Human Testosterone Replacement Therapy, a complete wellness and anti-aging solution for men.

What is Low Testosterone?

Testosterone, or the male hormone androgen, is primarily produced in the testes. This hormone is essential for a variety of basic functions, such as:

  • Muscle mass
  • Bone mass
  • Sexual function
  • Sperm production
  • Energy

We feel energized, youthful, and strong when testosterone levels are optimal. But the result is quite the opposite when the level drops below 300 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter). Without enough testosterone, a man’s condition can slowly deteriorate due to weight gain, exhaustion, and muscle atrophy.

How is Low Testosterone Treated?

You can restore low testosterone with injections, gels, creams, and skin patches. However, each treatment requires frequent admiration to maintain consistent physiologic levels, and your body becomes less sensitive to these methods over time.

The creams and gel may have an unpleasant smell, and you may need to apply them several times daily. They can feel awkward and become less effective over time. You must also avoid intimate contact to prevent the unwanted spread of testosterone to others.

Patches must also be applied daily and are sensitive to heat and moisture, which makes them less than optimal for some lifestyles. Intramuscular injections must be administered weekly or biweekly, often creating severe hormone fluctuations that can be emotionally and physically uncomfortable.

Many men choose testosterone pellet therapy to comfortably restore and maintain their testosterone levels, noticing improvements within the first few weeks of treatment. If you believe you have low testosterone, a quick test can determine if testosterone replacement therapy can help you regain the energy, vigor, and stamina you deserve.

What Are the Benefits of Testosterone Pellet Therapy?

Unlike traditional injections, creams, gels, and patches, testosterone pellets provide consistent and steady testosterone supplementation without frequent reapplication or dosing. The benefits last up to four months, so you usually require treatment only 3 or 4 times per year.

Faster-acting methods, such as injectable testosterone, causes your testosterone levels to spike immediately after the treatment and drop soon after. Testosterone pellets work by releasing a steady and consistent dose of hormones into your system, which can circumvent the uncomfortable side effects of varying testosterone levels. Testosterone patches might not cause spiking levels of testosterone but can have difficulties reaching an effective dose and can result in irritation. As such, testosterone pellet therapy is a more effective and tolerable treatment for most men.

What Is the Testosterone Pellet Implantation Process Like?

Pellet implantation is a simple in-office procedure that only takes a few minutes. There is almost no downtime, and you do not have to take any time off work to recover. More importantly, your life will improve as the testosterone is slowly released into your system without changes in your daily routine.

Before beginning testosterone pellet therapy, Dr. Hamawy will test your testosterone levels and calculate how much testosterone is necessary to achieve ideal physiologic levels to alleviate your symptoms. Customizing and adjusting your dosage of testosterone is critical to optimize treatment for you as an individual and maximize efficacy.

Once we’ve determined your ideal dose, the number of pellets needed for implantation is calculated. Each pellet is about the size of a grain of rice, and they typically cause no discomfort during or after implantation. To insert the pellets, Dr. Hamawy will numb the skin, usually in the hip area, and make a small incision to implant the pellets. These incisions are covered with Steri-strips, which are removed in five to seven days; stitches are not generally required.
