Gynecomastia

For men who experience gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts, it is common to be self-conscious of your body and avoid swimming, sports and other activities where you may have to expose your chest. While there are several reasons why your breasts may be overgrown, there is only one procedure to treat this cosmetic condition effectively – gynecomastia surgery.

At Princeton Plastic Surgeons, our gynecomastia surgery will restore masculine contours to your chest and make you feel better about your body knowing that you've undergone arguably the best male breast reduction New Jersey has to offer.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is characterized as having excess localized fat, glandular tissue, and/or skin in the male breasts. One breast may be larger than the other, or they may be equally overdeveloped. Gynecomastia can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Heredity
  • Hormone imbalance
  • The use of certain drugs
  • Obesity

Prior to surgery, your overall health may be evaluated to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be causing your breast tissues to enlarge. If the gynecomastia is a side effect of a medication, it will need to be changed or stopped entirely before and after surgery.

The Procedure

During gynecomastia surgery, your chest will be flattened and more masculine contours will be created. Prior to the start of the procedure, either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia will be administered depending on comfort level and medical necessity.

In cases where gynecomastia is mostly comprised of fatty tissue, liposuction may be used to extract the excess fat. Small incisions are made throughout the breast areas to insert a thin, hollow cannula tube. Gentle vacuum suction is then used to remove the fat permanently.

When glandular tissue and/or skin needs to be removed, the excision method using surgical tools will typically be used. This technique is also necessary if the nipple is being repositioned.

In some cases, both the liposuction and excision techniques will be used in conjunction. Incision placement will largely depend on individual preference as well as the surgical technique being used.

Recovery

Following surgery, bandages will be placed at the incision sites, and you will be given aftercare instructions to reduce the risks of complications and infection. A compression garment may also be issued to you to reduce swelling and support your new contours.

The results of our surgery for gynecomastia in Princeton, NJ are meant to be permanent, but can still be affected by significant changes in weight. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will retain your new chest contours on a long-term basis.
